A few years back, I began meeting regularly with a whip-smart, agnostic, Ivy League graduate, who was very liberal and we got on the topic of abortion. Of course he lite up with the well rehearsed claims of pro-choice people.
Shouldn’t it be the choice of a mother whether she wants to terminate her pregnancy? This is a woman’s right! What business is this to anyone else?
I listened carefully until he finished. Then I made this observation; “I find it interesting that when a pro-choice person is pregnant, if they don’t want their child they call it a fetus. But if they want the child, they call it a baby!
And, I’ve never heard of a pro-choice person in her 6th month, and showing, when asked when her baby is due, answering, “Oh, I don’t have a baby. It have a fetus.” I’ve never heard of a pregnant pro-choice person having “fetus shower” thrown for them. Of course it’s a baby shower! Just google “fetus shower invitations” and the only thing that comes up are baby shower websites.
That thought came as a total surprise to him. So I pressed on. Brett, If you go to www.harpseals.org you’ll read the outrage this organization has for the killing of baby seals in Canada, “95% of which are anywhere from three weeks, to three months pregnant” they claim. To be fair, I’m against killing seals brutally myself, but here’s the point; many of the same liberals who are outraged by the immorality of killing pregnant seals, have no problem with women killing their own babies.
So my friend tried another argument. “Well how do you know when life begins?” my young friend asked me, as if that were some unknowable mystery of the universe?
“Pastor Rick Warren, a pro-life advocate, was on NBC’s Meet the Press a dozen years ago. The interviewer, David Gregory asked the same question, “Pastor Warren, how in the world is it possible for you, or anyone to say when life begins?”
Rick didn’t miss a beat. “David you’re a bright guy, I’m shocked you’d even ask that question. Every 16 year old boy with a condom in his wallet knows exactly when life begins!”
The point of these stories isn’t to win an argument. My goal with pro-choice people is to help them understand the inconsistencies of pro-choice arguments. The question isn’t whether women ought to have rights or not, the question is whether their unborn children have rights as well. They’re not people yet, even some Christians say? Then what are we to do with this?
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13-16
And this;
“From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.” Psalm 22:10
They may not care what God thinks, but for a Christian to have that attitude is deadly.
