Did God Use Harvey Weinstein to Shake Us?

Harvey Weinstein changed all that. Almost every day since his story broke, women have been emboldened to expose other abusers. I have no way of knowing if each and every story is true, but when multiple women come forth and they’re not asking for money, most people assume, “where there’s smoke – there’s likely fire.”

So back to the question, “Did God use Harvey Weinstein to shake us up? I’m not a prophet, but it sounds like the kind of thing God would do. He certainly had done it in the past. God used wicked Nebuchadnezzar to punish Israel. He allowed David to commit adultery with Bathsheba and have her husband killed to cover it up. God used Pilate to condemn Jesus. He used Ananias and Sapphira lies to scare the church to honesty and holiness. Why God didn’t use other means to carry out his will? That’s over my pay grade. That’s God’s business.

So whether God exposed Harvey Weinstein or not, the good news is that the whole country is finally talking about sexual morality, even non-Christians! Rather than “anything goes,” for the first time there is a national debate about sexual morality that non-Christians and Christians can agree on!

So what? So just when I thought we found a topic that would enable us to put politics aside and measure a man by his morality and integrity and not his party affiliation, along comes the Judge Roy Moore controversy. I’ve been embarrassed how many Christians have chosen to turn a blind eye to Judge Roy Moore’s accusers, so numerous that you almost need a white board to keep them all straight! I am not saying Roy Moore is guilty. “Innocent until proven guilty,” has always been the cornerstone of our legal system, which is the envy of the world. However, the Bible says;

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3

This is not about Judge Moore. My embarrassment is for evangelical Christians who are willing to believe the best of another Christian, in their own political party, but castigate and judge the same behavior of non-Christians in the opposite political party. When Hollywood celebs, or a liberal democrat falls, we cheer, but when one of our own appears to have sinned, the “who are we to judge?” question just jumps from our lips. That hypocrisy is not lost on the non-Christian I’ve talked to.

Putting it another way; should we really expect less from believers who have the Holy Spirit and claim to be “good Christians,” than we do from non-Christians who do not have the Spirit?

So what am I asking Christians to do?

When a Christian, or non-Christian, democrat, or republican, is accused of a crime, or dishonorable behavior, expect more from those who claim to be Christians than from those who appear not to be. Their behavior is more than criminal, or sinful, it embarrasses Jesus. It sullies his reputation. And Christians, who blindly ignore their accusers and vote for him just because he’s a republican or a “good Christian man” (all evidence to the contrary), are guilty of the very same thing.

This goes way beyond Roy Moore. President Trump claims to be a Christian, yet many evangelicals are more than willing to look the other way at his crude, boastful, un-Christlike behavior because “he’s our president,” a respect they rarely gave Barrack Obama, who also claimed to be a Christian and was also our president. That is hypocrisy. And it’s an embarrassment to serious, thoughtful Christians and to God. Judge our leaders by their character and behavior, not their party, or we Christians will reap what we sow.
