It should come as no surprise that people who are not-yet-Christians have accepted and therefore repeat things about God they believe are true, but in fact are not.
Today, let’s briefly talk about just a few of the most common myths, even some Christians believe.
- “We’re all God’s children”
The apostle John said this of Jesus and “his children,”“He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:11-13Note: John says that human “become” the children of God, only after they’ve been born again.
“In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.” Romans 9:8
“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.” Galatians 3:26
So, where did the notion come from that all humans are the children of God? Well it is true that all humans were created in the image of God, but that’s completely different identity than actually being a child of God.
Why is this important for us to even spend time on this issue? Because I’ve met people who question whether God would ever send his children to Hell. “Of course not,” they say. Therefore, they believe they have nothing to fear after death. “If we’re all God’s children, then we’re all going to live with God, in heaven someday if we’ve been good people,” they believe. Don’t let your friends believe this lie.
- “There is more than one way to God.”
Whenever I hear this statement, here’s my response;
“It’s interesting that Jews don’t think there are other ways to God. Muslims don’t believe that either, nor do Christians or most of the world’s major religions. The only people who seem to think there are more than one way to God, are people who don’t appear to actually believe in God!”My theory for the reason these people want to believe there are more than one way to God is that they want to believe one of those ways is by “believing in God” and being a good person. Because if that’s true, they’re “in.” (saved)Ironically, when I ask them how they actually know there is a heaven to which they hope to go someday, most don’t know that idea actually came from the Bible. I’ll generally ask if they believe the Bible is true. If they say “I’m not sure,” then I’ll follow-up with this questions, “Then why do you believe what the Bible teaches about heaven, but don’t believe the Bible is true?” I’m not really trying to win an argument. I just want them to think about what they’re saying. They’re cherry picking the parts of the Bible they like and dismissing the parts they don’t. On the other hand, if they say that they do believe in the Bible, then I remind them of this fact, the Bible teaches that the only way to Heaven is by faith in Jesus life, death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
To believe you can get to Heaven by any other means is to believe you can get to the moon by many ways. There is only one way – a spacecraft. There’s only one way to heaven – Jesus.
